Angkor Wat is a temple complex in Cambodia and the largest religious monument in the world. Built in the 12th century by the king of the prosperous Khmer empire, Angkor Wat was built as a royal temple dedicated to a Hindu deity. After the city of Angkor fell to invaders, Angkor Wat receded into the jungle but continued as a Buddhisttemple and a pilgrimage site over the centuries. Angkor Wat, the largest and the best preserved monument of the Angkor group, is an architectural masterpiece. Its perfection in composition, balance, proportions, relief's and sculpture make it one of the finest monuments in the world. Angkor Wat is build with a series of elevated towers, covered galleries, chambers, porches and courtyards on different levels linked by stairways.
